This volume was transcribed from the original documents on file in the Gloucester County Building. The transcription was made word-for-word and line-by-line. Eccentricities of spelling and arrangement in the original documents have been carefully observed.

Certain affidavits prepared by slave owners are still.extant
and have been transcribed and inserted immediately preceding the particular certificte of manumission to which they are related.

The index of names in the back of the book is arranged alphabetically. Slaves and free Negroes are indicated by the underscoring of the page numbers on which they appear. Officials and Owners are designated as follows:
